Compass

Compass shows the cloud flows, plugin steps, business rules and environment variables in your environment as they are right now, and lets you change them.

What Is Compass?

Where the rest of Cartographer is about documentation and understanding, Compass is about monitoring and control. It sits in the Cartographer app's navigation, beside Solution Manager and the Component Dashboard.

Its five tabs are Dashboard, Cloud Flows, Plugin Steps, Environment Variables and Business Rules. It also has a Refresh button. The Dashboard cards and the four list tabs read the whole environment directly, with no solution filter, so they work before you crawl anything.

Compass brings together the management of cloud flows, plugin steps, environment variables, and business rules into a single, filterable interface. Instead of switching between the Power Automate portal, the Plugin Registration Tool, and the classic solution explorer, you can turn flows, steps and rules on or off and edit environment variable values from one place.

Dashboard

The main landing page of Compass is a single-screen overview. Its four cards count the cloud flows, business rules, plugin steps and environment variables in the environment right now. Its two sections use crawled data and say "No crawled data yet" until a solution has been crawled.

  • Recently Modified Components lists the 10 most recently modified crawled components.
  • Component Breakdown shows how many crawled components there are of each type.

Cloud Flows

See the cloud flows in the whole environment and turn each one on or off.

Capabilities

  • Enable / Disable turns a flow on or off. A flow that is Microsoft-named or managed asks you to type ENABLE or DISABLE before the Confirm button works. Any other flow gets an ordinary Cancel / Confirm dialog.
  • Search finds a flow by name.
Disabling a cloud flow stops it from running immediately. Any scheduled or triggered executions will not fire until the flow is re-enabled. The typed ENABLE/DISABLE confirmation on Microsoft-named and managed flows is a safeguard against accidental changes. Use the same caution with your own production flows.

Plugin Steps

See the plugin steps in the whole environment and enable or disable each one.

Capabilities

  • Enable / Disable turns a step on or off. Disabling a step that is Microsoft-named or managed asks you to type DISABLE before the Confirm button works. Any other change, including enabling a step, gets an ordinary Cancel / Confirm dialog.
  • Search and filters find a step by name, switch the scope between "Custom Steps Only" and "All Steps (incl. Platform)", and narrow the list by stage. The tab opens on Custom Steps Only.
Disabling a plugin step can cause data integrity issues if other components depend on it. Review the Automation Map for the relevant table before disabling any plugin steps.

Environment Variables

View and edit environment variable values directly from Compass without navigating to the classic solution explorer.

  • View all environment variables with their current and default values
  • Edit current values inline
  • Reset a value back to the default, after a confirmation
  • Identify variables with no value set (potential misconfiguration)

Business Rules

Manage business rule activation state across all tables.

  • View all business rules with their table and status
  • Activate or deactivate business rules with a toggle
  • Search by rule name or table
Before you deactivate a business rule, open the Automation Map for its table. It draws the plugin steps, business rules, classic workflows and cloud flows registered on that table.

Accessing Compass

Compass is part of the Cartographer app rather than a separate one. To reach it:

  1. Open the Cartographer app from your app list
  2. Choose Compass from the left-hand navigation, alongside Solution Manager, Component Dashboard, Automation Map and Best Practices
You can use Compass before you crawl anything. Only the two crawled sections on the Dashboard wait for a crawl. Compass runs with your own Dataverse privileges, so it shows only what your user is allowed to read, and changes need Cartographer to be activated.
