Activation

Cartographer is completely free — no tiers, no trial, no credit card, and nothing to buy. Activation registers your name, company and email with VerseBlocks. Every feature is included, and crawling and exporting need Cartographer to be activated first.

What Activation Is For

Activation is free. Most actions need Cartographer to be activated first, including crawling, exports, user guides, Best Practices and changes made in Compass. Activating registers a free licence record with VerseBlocks. We use your name, company and email to know who uses Cartographer and to contact you about it, for example about a breaking change or a security issue. Now and then we may ask what you think. We do not sell your details.

A licence key does exist behind the scenes, but it is never shown to you and you never need to know it, copy it, or paste it anywhere.

Activation is per environment. If you crawl solutions in more than one Dataverse environment, install and activate Cartographer separately in each one. There is no per-environment cost.

The Three Fields

Activation asks for three things, and nothing else:

That's the entire form. There is no plan to choose, no payment method to enter, and no license key field. Activation needs no password and sends no confirmation email.

What Activation Sends

The names, metadata and documentation of your components never leave your environment. Neither do the search index or your search queries.

Activation sends your name, company, email address, Dataverse organisation ID and environment URL to VerseBlocks at cartographer-api.azurewebsites.net. After you activate, Cartographer also sends usage reports. Each one carries your licence and organisation IDs, a timestamp, which feature ran or which page was opened, counts and a small detail field. The only text from your environment that appears in a report is the display name of the solution crawled. Reports never include component names, summaries or error messages.

There is no setting to turn usage reports off. Before you activate, nothing is sent except the activation request itself. After you activate, Cartographer keeps working if VerseBlocks is unreachable. The full list is in the privacy policy.

How to Activate

  5. 5Click Activate and wait up to 30 seconds for it to finish
Activating needs Create and Write on the Configuration table, which the Cartographer Admin role has. The app is associated only with the System Administrator and System Customizer roles, so someone who holds only a Cartographer role also needs that role added to the app. In make.powerapps.com, open Apps, select Cartographer, choose Share and add the role.
Activation happens once per environment. After it completes, the Activation page shows your status, a Scheduled Crawling section and a Usage section. Scheduled crawls do not run until you bind a Dataverse connection and turn on two cloud flows.

After You Activate

When activation finishes, the page shows a Status of Active, the Last Validated date and your Org ID, followed by a Scheduled Crawling section and a Usage section. Usage lists the counts for Solutions Crawled and Components.

Scheduled Crawling has two rows. The Dataverse connection row says whether the Cartographer Dataverse Connection reference is bound to a connection. The Crawl flows row says whether both cloud flows are on, and names any that are off.

Both flows ship switched off and the connection reference ships unbound, because only you can supply a connection. To make schedules run, bind the connection reference to a Dataverse connection, then turn on both flows, "Cartographer - Scheduled Crawl Processor" and "Cartographer - On-Demand Crawl". Scheduled crawls run as the owner of that connection, who needs the same rights as the person who runs Crawl Now.

When both are done, the page says "Scheduled crawling is ready. Set a Crawl Frequency on a solution in Solution Manager and it will run on its own." Until then a Crawl Frequency will not run. Crawl Now, search and everything else still work.

If Activation Fails

If clicking Activate does not complete successfully:

  • Check that your environment has a network connection — activation needs to reach the VerseBlocks backend
  • Make sure all three fields — name, company and email — are filled in
  • Click Activate again
